PURE POTENTIAL | Public Palace
19 - 24 April 2022
PURE POTENTIAL: do you know when you are *working*? is a one-week intervention to interrogate The Old Lock Up as a site and space for experimentation, interaction and social practice. Presented as a series of site-specific experiments using temporary installation methods and care practices, the work responds to the spatial ‘conditions’ of the site. These interactions question how human and non-human resources might inhabit space, revealing new and un-utilised potentials.
PUBLIC PALACE
IG: @_publicpalace
Public Palace is a regionally-based collective exploring the social, critical and material potentials of public space. Interested in collaboration across spatial practices, Public Palace encourages the intersection of ideas via experimental, temporal and durational projects. Often realised via psycho-geography and social practice, their shared spatial aesthetic is inherently concerned with process, performance and conceptual art practices. Acknowledging public space as a ‘participatory landscape', their object and action-based experiments position public space as a studio and interaction as form. Their interdisciplinary approach borrows methodologies from construction, architecture, public art, graffiti and maintenance to intervene in existing structures in new ways – an unlearning of hegemonic systems to offer small acts of resistance.
NOTES ON WORK | Day 1 – 5
Energy – Time – Desire
Work is a condition of being.
However you define work is work.
Does it need to have value to be work? If it doesn’t, what's the point?
What value does the body have if it’s working? The body is the worker.
When work ends, life ends (the body’s *work* – cellular, molecular).
~ WORK OR DIE ~
Work is energy expenditure.
Work – Care – Pleasure
How much does it cost?
Are work and labour different? How is work organised?
The notion of work is porous.
When we talk about work, we also talk about leisure. Leisure = *better* work.
if you are a professional artist, can you still make art for leisure?
Work vs. leisure or working by way of leisure?
